I have suffered with dandruff since I was a baby. My mother told me I was born with it! I have tried all of the conventional ways of trying to get rid of it by using dandruff shampoo like Selsun Blue.

According to http://www.drugs.com/, the side effects of using Selsun Blue include: skin irritation, hair loss and discoloration. That is more than enough to scare me away from using it ever again! Thankfully, there are safer and better alternatives.

1. Coconut Oil

I have been experimenting the past few months on a solution. I have found that coconut oil is the best topical remedy. It is very simple what to do. Take a 1 tablespoon of melted coconut oil (or less) and massage into your scalp.

Make sure you massage into every inch of your scalp for about one minute. Leave in your hair for at least 30 minutes. I have been leaving it in my hair for several hours just to be sure. After waiting for at least 30 minutes, shampoo your hair as normal. Make sure all of the oil gets washed out or else your hair may appear greasy!

Repeat this process every 1-2 weeks for maintenance until you find you no longer need this treatment.

2. ACV and Honey

Other treatments I have heard that are effective are apple cider vinegar (ACV) diluted with water and honey. I have tried ACV and it is soothing to my scalp, but does not get rid of the dandruff.

I have not tried massaging honey into my scalp as I heard it could lighten my hair over time. I have darker hair and would like it to stay this way, so I am cautious about trying this method.

Treating your scalp with coconut oil is very effective at getting rid of dandruff. I can personally say this is the most effective way of eliminating dandruff.

Have you tried any methods for getting rid of dandruff? What are they?
