I used to be so intimidated at the thought of trying to cook Indian food. Don’t get me wrong, I always enjoyed the taste and trying foods from different regions. However, it seemed so foreign to me that I thought it would take me hours to get through one recipe. So I didn’t even try for a long time. This ground beef curry is a dish I have been making for a while with ease after finally learning to cook Indian food.
One Easter, my sister wanted to try an Indian spinach dish, or saag. My brother jumped in on the plan and declared he wanted to make a potato dish from the same cookbook. We had chicken to go with everything and rice as well. It was such a delicious meal and I realized it wasn’t as complex as I had made it out to be in my head. Still, it took me a while to even attempt anything for a long time. Learning how to cook Indian food was one of the goals I had set in the back of my head, but I justified, well, I can do it someday.
Learning to Cook World Cuisines
Finally, one of my favorite bloggers, Courtney from Revived Kitchen, started offering her Flavor Crash Course. As I started going through the material and the videos, I became much more confident in cooking with other cuisines around the world. I grew up making Italian food from pizza to all kinds of pastas, flavoring everything with lots of garlic. When I began changing my diet and healing myself, I had to re-learn how to cook. It was so frustrating because I always loved to cook, especially gourmet food. My diet had been full of grains and bread. Switching to learning how to cook other foods was not an easy change.
I am so happy I took Courtney’s Flavor Crash Course. I kept telling myself that I wanted to learn how to cook other dishes and cuisines and her course helped me to experiment more and cook food full of flavor. It gave me the push that I needed to just start cooking other fares. I love that she says she is not about perfection. She helps you to learn how to build flavor, no matter what it is you are trying to cook.
Cooking Ground Beef Curry
After taking her course, I have begun cooking Indian food all the time. My husband is loving the food too. I am also happy that I can enjoy eating Indian food while avoiding consuming vegetable oils that almost all restaurants use as their cooking oil. Below I am showing you how to make ground beef curry. Although beef isn’t traditional to Indian cooking, it is a fun way to mix things up when it comes to using ground beef.
- 1 lb grass fed ground beef
- 1 lb grass fed ground beef heart (can grind in your food processor)
- One medium onion, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- Whole organic jalapeno pepper, minced
- 1 1/2 inch whole ginger, peeled and minced
- 2 tbsp fat of choice - ghee, butter, lard, coconut oil
- 1 tsp organic mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp organic ground fenugreek
- 2 tsp organic cumin
- 2 tsp organic coriander
- 1/2 tsp organic turmeric
- 1/2 tsp organic paprika
- 1/8 tsp organic black pepper
- 1/2 tsp organic garam masala
- 1/4 tsp organic cloves
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 1 medium tomato, chopped
- 1 cup coconut milk
- Heat up a pot to medium heat with lard or ghee.
- While the pot is heating, chop up onions, mince garlic, ginger and the pepper.
- Add mustard seeds to fat to allow them to bloom.
- When they begin popping, add the onion.
- Once the onion is translucent, add the garlic, ginger and pepper.
- Add the ground beef and heart at this point.
- When the meat is browned, add the spices and evenly distribute them.
- Lastly, add the coconut milk and the tomato.
- Cover and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes.
