I decided to make homemade peanut butter the other day. I was in the process of making peanut butter chocolate ice cream for my boyfriend. I really wanted to do something special for him and he loves this ice cream. His favorite peanut butter is Peter Pan, but I could not bring myself to use this peanut butter with hydrogenated oils so I decided to try to make a good tasting homemade version.
Why Make Your Own Peanut Butter?
1. You can control the ingredients
The hydrogenated oils and processed ingredients are one reason that you would want to make your own version. This is especially important if you are on the GAPS or SCD diets where you don’t have room for cheating! Most commercial brands like Peter Pan have terrible industrial oils in them that you should never eat. Making peanut butter at home allows you to control 100% of the ingredients.
2. Save Money
It is cheaper to make your own peanut butter, especially if you buy peanuts in bulk. There are many places online you can buy several pounds of peanuts. My recipe only calls for 2 cups of peanuts, so it can be made very cheaply. You can also make a big batch at once so it saves you time. Just keep in mind that nuts and nut butters can go rancid easily, so be sure to consume them quickly or store them in the refrigerator.
3. Store Bought Versions are not Soaked
It is also healthier to make peanut butter at home because most commercial brands are not soaked. I have demonstrated how to soak nuts and seeds in another article. When you soak nuts and seeds, the antinutrients are deactivated. There is a substantial amount of phytic acid in peanuts, so soaking them helps to reduce this.
- Put peanuts and sea salt into food processor or blender and process until it turns into peanut butter.
- While the food processor is running, melt coconut oil in a saucepan.
- Once peanuts have turned into a smooth peanut butter, add melted coconut oil and sugar. Transfer to a glass container and store in the refrigerator.
