I have been making tallow balm for years to use as a body lotion. Eczema is something I have been struggling with since I was a child. Going on the GAPS diet helped clear it up, but it did return again unfortunately. Recently, I had an idea of making honey tallow balm.

Since I had a lot of success getting relief from eczema by applying honey to my hands as mask, I thought adding it into my tallow balm would make the balm more soothing. Using plain tallow balm was the only lotion that gave the eczema on my hands any relief. It did not “cure” it, but it did make it less uncomfortable. After experimenting with this recipe, I created this new balm with raw local honey in it. I applied the new balm to my skin and to my daughters’ skin that also struggle with eczema, and it provided a better relief than the regular balm recipe.

That being said, this balm can be used for anyone really. Tallow is one of the best, if not the best ingredients for your skin. This recipe is excellent to use for dry skin in general. I may want to caution you from using it on a baby under one year in case they ingest any. It is recommended that you wait until a baby is one year old before giving them honey because of the potential for botulism. Now, for the recipe!

Instructions

  1. Gently melt tallow over medium low heat
  2. Once melted, add into mixing bowl and measure out honey. You may use manuka honey if you want the balm to be more medicinal.
  3. Use a hand mixer to blend the honey and tallow together.
  4. You may have to wait a little until the tallow solidifies, but the honey and tallow will blend together nicely.
  5. Blend until the mixture has a nice whipped consistency.
  6. Portion into jars once finished and apply onto irritated skin!
